I come from a long line of proud bakers. My great grandfather started Brook street bakery in 1925 delivering bread and cakes via horse and cart. They also had a shop on Cardiff road selling their produce. My grandfather took over the business where he made many wedding cakes all piped ornately with royal icing. He retired in 1972. My grandmother who was very close to the Ferraris was there the night the first loaf of bread came out of the oven. The business grew through the production of gateaux, bread and cakes eventually they had stores all across South Wales. This is where my passion for cake decorating began back in 1989. As an art and design student for five years my holiday job was working in the decorating department at Ferraris bakery Hirwaun. Starting with piping which lead on to wedding cakes. When I graduated I was offered a management position running the cake decorating department on the proviso of attending Neath college where I gained the necessary qualifications for the position. At this point I was creating specialist cakes daily. Unfortunately when Ferraris was taken over by new owners specialist cakes ceased so at age 25 I decided to start my own business and “Too Nice To Slice”was born. Creating designer wedding and celebration cakes. Hundreds of cakes were produced on a yearly basis travelling far and wide. Having sold that business to start a family I returned to cakes where I was regularly approached to teach my craft which has now turned into another thriving business of Elizabeth Kay Cakes and Classes.
